He would, in fact, be quite average, were it not for his unusual skin and hair. Leofric has pronounced vitligo. His natural skin color is a medium ruddy tan, but he has pronounced pale white splashes, spots, and stripes across his skin; in some places, the patterning resembles that of the chambered nautilus. His hair, too, follows this pattern; it is mostly a dark reddish brown, but with a few pale white streaks. His armor is made from tiger-shark skin, and he tends to wear darker colors, especially deep violet and blue colors. He tends to wear wide-brimmed hats, and will often wear his swimming goggles out of the water, claiming that bright light hurts his eyes. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- BACKGROUND When asked, Leofric Chevalier will tell you that it was only a short time ago that he washed up on a remote island with a monastery devoted to Boccob. He arrived with nothing on his person save a crudely carved coral holy symbol depicting a labyrinth pattern (of the type used for meditation). He was taken in by the monks and nursed back to health. He claims that he has no memory of any time before the monastery, not even hazy recollections, just two strong feelings : a driving sense of destiny and purpose, and a lurking dread of something chasing him. Beyond that, he says, he knew nothing, not even his name (a name given to him instead by the monks, to reflect his driven nature). Though the monks gave him access to the library and trained him in the scholarly arts, he felt no call to Boccob (though he respected the god's knowledge and power), and instead felt a deeper call to a different calling, a faith he called quite simply the Path (more on that in the section "The Path"). Practitioners of the Path are rare, but known to the scholars of Boccob, and one of the upper priests chose to further teach Leo how to tap into the divine will inside him. Leo was a fast learner, leading many of the monks to speculate that he must have had prior training before he lost his memory, and within a year he had learned all they could teach him. He said that he felt the Path calling him, and that he needed to leave to seek his destiny. Most of this story is true. But it is the lie that becomes the most important part. In fact, Leo remembers everything of his past, and his past was complicated indeed. His true name is Kolazhin, a sahuagin name meaning both "wanderer/nomad" and "nautilus." As to why a human would have such a strange name, well, what humans do is their businessÉ but Leofric was never human in the first place. Kolazhin was born to a remote sahuagin tribe. Like his brothers and sisters, at one point he took a dark delight in conducting raids on shore communities, on aventi and on darfellan, in taking lives for the glory of the tribe. One day while on a scouting mission, he and his brother tagged along behind a human ship, clinging to the bottom to gain a little extra speed and take a rest for a few days while they reached their destination. While tagging along though, Kolazhin listened in on the conversations between the humans on board, including a learned human scholar and adventurer who would tell stories to one of the cabin boys. He soon grew enraptured, staying with the ship long after he should have to listen. He was shocked and impressed by the sheer breadth of the human's knowledge. Though sahuagin are quite intelligent, they have little book learning, and no real way to record history, so to him some of what the human knew seemed almost like magic. How could any one person know so much about both past and present? The sahuagin had stories and songs of the past, certainly, but these were oral tradition, myth and legend, while this human presented his tales as pure fact. Being extremely young for a sahaugin and quite naive, he tried to steal the human's notebook when they stopped briefly at an island to get fresh water, only to be disappointed when he couldn't read the writing and when it dissolved in the water. It was not enough, though. Stories and knowledge became an obsession for Kolazhin, an addiction. During raids, he would steal books from those on the shore and other forms of recorded knowledge from the Aventi, hiding them in an onshore cave. He taught himself to read Common slowly, sometimes pleading with Aventi prisoners, trading food and sometimes even setting them free in exchange for knowledge. He soon learned much of history and geography, of life on the land, of legends and myths, and of many minor facts. But it was still not enough. He hungered for more, and, further, for something more, something else. Since he'd come to learn of his supposed enemies not simply as enemies to be raided and fools to be slaughtered, he'd come to empathize with them, and even to feel terrible for his past crimes. The thought that at one point in a frenzy he had devoured human flesh with his siblings now sickened him, the idea that he was leaving orphaned children and ruined lives was abhorrent. He came up with excuse after excuse to not go on raids. Eventually, he took a stand, derailing a raid on an Aventi village and protecting them from his own tribe. For that, he was to be executed, before those same Aventi saved his life. He fled, now exiled from his home and hunted by his own people for being a traitor. It was at this point that the dreams began. Powerful, strange dreams of carefully walking (walking, and not swimming!) a huge pattern; dreams of the voices of the heroes of the past, and a feeling, a calling to something truly else. As his dreams progressed, they became stranger; dreams of walking on land under a searing bright sky, but feeling no pain, and feeling lungs (lungs!) swell with breath. He dreamed of the human cities he'd read about, of the world on the surface, of another life. And more than this, he dreamed of that feeling, that calling to another life. It must have been fate that he happened to find the Book of the Path among his hidden stash of stolen books, an old journal by an ancient human philosopher outlining the tenants of the faith: You owe nothing to the gods. Respect them, but they do not own you. The only true path to immortality is to make your mark on the world and to ensure that history remembers you, for good or ill. Know the heroes of the past, tell their stories, know their history, for in this way we ensure they live forever. Know the dangers of the present and the ways of the world, such that you may find the best path for making your mark. Wander far and wide, for you never know where your destiny lies. Be not afraid, for you are alive, and you walk the Path, and nothing in this world can stop you. He chose to devote himself completely to this faith, and he felt that the dreams were calling him to another life. He was already not sahuagin in his heart, this he had felt ever since he'd realized the horrors his people had committed upon the other races. There was only one thing to do: become truly human, and chase his destiny. That was his fate. He consulted an ancient sahuagin sea witch for aid, a creature as much an exile as he. She chuckled darkly, and told him that his path would doom his soul. He did not care. Immortality was to become known by history; the soul was inconsequential, destined to fade into the elements of the planes or be devoured by the unmaking waters of the ocean. Only deeds were eternal. Then, she said, if you are prepared... There is an ancient evil in those unmaking waters, a creature which sleeps forever. In its dreams, you can make a deal to gain what you desire, but in exchange, when your time is up, it will devour your soul, destroy everything you are. If that is an acceptable price for the land and destiny you seek.... To him it was. And so she called on the Leviathan, the chaos of the unmaking waters from before the world, called on the primordial powers of the waves, and it was that Leviathan's eye, larger than cities, larger than dreams stared down on him and fixed him in its gaze. Its voice spoke through his blood without words, and he knew in that moment that his fate was sealed. His scales became skin, his gills sealed and water filled his newfound lungs as he struggled towards the surface, flailing with his weakened limbs, climbing towards the light... Towards destiny. ABOUT THE PATH The Path is an obscure faith, practiced mostly by wanderers who find the teachings of the philosophers and scholars who have come across it in the past. It is a faith mostly devoted to self-reflection and meditation. In times of prosperity, the Path is often called the Path of Villains or the Path of Shadows, for many who follow it bring sorrow and war in their wake, intent on upsetting the status quo. But in times of war or sorrow, the Path is called the Path of Heroes, for in order to stand out amongst the darkness, its adherents must shine with a brilliant light. Though adherents of the Path follow no gods, they do show respect to certain gods, particularly those associated with great acts of either valor or cruelty (depending) and especially those associated with knowledge or travel. More than the gods, though, they revere and idolize the heroes of myth and legend, great figures of the past who accomplished mighty deeds. As previously stated, the primary tenants of the Path are: You owe nothing to the gods. Respect them, but they do not own you. The only true path to immortality is to make your mark on the world and to ensure that history remembers you, for good or ill. Know the heroes of the past, tell their stories, know their history, for in this way we ensure they live forever. Know the dangers of the present and the ways of the world, such that you may find the best path for making your mark. Wander far and wide, for you never know where your destiny lies. Be not afraid, for you are alive, and you walk the Path, and nothing in this world can stop you. Statistics: Alignment: Neutral. Though there are those who follow the Path who have been of extreme alignments, the faith itself is neutral, for both heroes AND villains are capable of changing the course of history. While a Good adherent of the Path accepts that an Evil adherent can be just as mighty a figure in the flow of history, she will also make it her mission to stop him. In a way, this means that BOTH are part of a legend. Clerics of course must be within one step of True Neutral, as they embody this balance. A true legendary hero must have a legendary villain; a great freedom fighter must be opposed by a paragon of the law. Symbol: a Labyrinth pattern. Those very few shrines to the Path consist of a simple labyrinth pattern inscribed into the earth, where followers may meditate while walking along the path. Holy symbols feature this as a symbol. Domains Knowledge -- A true follower of the Path is a student not just of history, but of the world around them. A student must both know the deeds of those who have come before, and the goings on in the world around them. To change the world, one must first KNOW the world. Travel -- Those who walk the Path are often called to travel very far from home; a true changer of history must be prepared to visit lands far beyond what they know. Courage -- One who would change history must be steadfast of heart and unflinching in the face of danger; they should also inspire those around them to be so as well. Balance -- As stated: a freedom fighter must have a paragon of law to oppose. A true hero must have a legendary villain. SWEET thanks. I'm picking spells now -- even though clerics technically know EVERY spell on the Cleric list, that list is fucking gigantic (Especially if you're me and you have every book...) and I find it useful to just pick a few spells that I'd LIKELY have prepared every day

I need to figure out if Purify Food and Drink works on salt water, because if it does, we've got unlimited pure water... and if it doesn't, I can just take Create Water.
